Trump Warns of Pulling of FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston, Olympics from Los Angeles

Former President Trump has yet again announced he would influence FIFA to relocate global soccer tournament events from a venue based on municipal political climate, with the Boston region now being the most recent urban area to face such warnings from the American leader. Additionally, Trump indicated he would consider parallel steps against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to potential safety issues.

Official Power and Informal Leverage

Even though Trump holds no formal power to directly relocate either event, he is able to lobby the respective governing bodies overseeing each tournament to change venues.

Background of Comments

His statements were made during a media briefing with Javier Milei, who was at the presidential residence following the disclosure of a massive rescue package for the Argentine economy. Near the close of the event, a reporter inquired Trump about a current “street takeover” in downtown Boston where authorities were targeted and a patrol car was ignited. The correspondent also asked if these incidents could lead to the revocation of hosting duties for the expanded World Cup.

“We could take them away,” the former president stated concerning the World Cup fixtures, planned to be staged at the Foxborough venue. “The city's leader is not good … she’s far-left, and they are taking over areas of the city. That’s a pretty big assertion, right?”

Street Takeovers and Ideological Perceptions

Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized occurrence where participants congregate on public avenues late at night to engage in dangerous driving, have become a ongoing issue in metropolitan centers since the lockdown closures. Recent similar events have become aggressive in the region, specifically in Boston. Yet, these occurrences are generally not regarded as linked to any specific political ideology.

“If a mayor is failing, and I feel there’s unsafe conditions, I'd call the FIFA head, who is phenomenal, and suggest it should be shifted to a different city,” the former president said during the event. “He will do that. He may not enjoy the action, but he would comply. Readily, he’d do it.”

Political Connections

FIFA President has made no secret his attempts to be closely connected with the former president ahead of the 2026 event, set to be hosted in numerous American venues across the America along with several in the northern neighbor and three in Mexico. The organization's leader has appeared at multiple Oval Office events, facilitated Trump hand over the Club World Cup cup after the concluding game, and has even postponed his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a journey to the Arab region previously.

Past Statements

Despite this, Trump from suggesting the relocation of soccer events from additional American venues. On September 25, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis came under parallel comments, with Trump asserting both cities were “led by ideological activists who don’t know what they are doing,” while criticizing the safety level of both cities and suggesting that games could be shifted.

Official Rebuttal

Victor Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s statements when he commented subsequently at a conference in London.

“It’s FIFA’s tournament, our responsibility, we decide those decisions,” the vice-president stated. “Politely to national heads, soccer is transcends any individual and football will endure their administration and their leadership. That’s the essence of this sport, that it is transcends one leader and beyond a nation.”

LA Games Warning

Similarly, Trump’s reply to a question about Boston extended to a parallel statement regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“If I believed Los Angeles was failing to be sufficiently organized, I will move it to a different city as needed,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I may have to obtain a varying consent, but we'd do that.”

The permission Trump refers to would have to come from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The president, she, was elected to her role in this year and has so far not hold a public appearance with Trump, though she stated that she would like a meeting with him at eventually.

Further Comments

The former president also questioned the state's leader Newsom’s management of this year’s California fires, stating that a parallel incident could lead to the removal of the Olympics.

“When Newsom refuses to cooperate, we’re gonna have to be very tough,” the former president said.

His message was just as clear for Boston.

“The city better address these issues,” Trump stated. “It's my message.”
