Over 250 persons have been taken into custody in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of escalating federal immigration control actions, according to official sources.

Growing Federal Operations

Charlotte represents the newest American city to experience strengthened federal presence, following analogous operations in larger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles previously. Federal authorities have stated that those detained include individuals with criminal backgrounds and gang members.

Regional Resistance

Nevertheless, local lawmakers and inhabitants have vocally opposed the apprehensions, which federal authorities have termed "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's top elected official has claimed that residents are being targeted based on their racial background.

"We've seen masked, heavily armed agents in paramilitary garb driving non-descript vehicles, focusing on American individuals based on their appearance, practicing racial discrimination and apprehending unspecified people in community locations," commented the state governor. "This approach is not strengthening our security."

Administration Stance

In a freshly published declaration, a federal official asserted that the operation has resulted in the apprehension of "among the most hazardous criminal unauthorized persons", including organized crime affiliates.

Other subjects arrested had been previously convicted for various violations, including assault on law enforcement personnel, driving while intoxicated, theft and altering government documents, according to the agency.

Municipal Response

The city's chief executive, also a Democratic Party member, encouraged federal officials to work with "regard" for the city's principles. She also praised those who took part in considerable numbers on Saturday to protest the federal authority's measures in the city.

"I am deeply concerned by many of the videos I've viewed," remarked the municipal executive. "To each person in Charlotte who is feeling concerned or apprehensive: you are not isolated. Your city backs you."

Ongoing Actions

Federal officials have not disclosed how long the operations will continue. Chicago's crackdown started in September and remains active. Similar to other cities undergoing immigration enforcement, certain foreign nationals in Charlotte are staying indoors due to concern about federal authorities in the city, according to regional news.

The state governor stated he's observing reports that the operation will extend to Raleigh, another North Carolina city, following.

"Repeatedly, I call on federal authorities to focus on violent offenders, not community members walking along the road, attending church, or putting up seasonal displays," he stated.
