Enjoying the Collapse of the Tories? That's Comprehensible – But Completely Incorrect

There have been times when Tory figureheads have seemed reasonably coherent outwardly – and different periods where they have sounded completely unhinged, yet continued to be cherished by their party. We are not in either of those times. One prominent Conservative left the crowd unmoved when she presented to her conference, despite she threw out the divisive talking points of migrant-baiting she believed they wanted.

This wasn't primarily that they’d all woken up with a fresh awareness of humanity; instead they were skeptical she’d ever be able to deliver it. Effectively, fake vegan meat. Tories hate that. An influential party member was said to label it a “New Orleans funeral”: boisterous, vigorous, but ultimately a goodbye.

Coming Developments for the Organization With a Decent Case to Make for Itself as the Most Historically Successful Political Organization in History?

Some are having renewed consideration at a particular MP, who was a hard “no” at the start of the night – but now it’s the end, and rivals has withdrawn. Others are creating a buzz around Katie Lam, a 34-year-old MP of the 2024 intake, who presents as a countryside-based politician while filling her online profiles with immigration-critical posts.

Is she poised as the leader to counter the rival party, now surpassing the Tories by a substantial lead? Does a term exist for beating your rivals by adopting their policies? Furthermore, if there isn’t, perhaps we might adopt a term from combat sports?

It isn't necessary to examine America to understand this, nor read Daniel Ziblatt’s influential work, the historical examination: every one of your synapses is screaming it. The mainstream right is the key defense preventing the far right.

Ziblatt’s thesis is that representative governments persist by appeasing the “elite classes” happy. Personally, I question this as an organising principle. One gets the impression as though we’ve been keeping the affluent and connected for ages, at the detriment of other citizens, and they never seem sufficiently content to halt efforts to take a bite out of disability benefits.

However, his study goes beyond conjecture, it’s an comprehensive document review into the Weimar-era political organization during the pre-war period (along with the British Conservatives around the early 1900s). As moderate conservatism loses its confidence, if it commences to chase the terminology and symbolic politics of the far right, it hands them the control.

The former Prime Minister associating with an influential advisor was one particularly egregious example – but radical alignment has become so obvious now as to eliminate competing Conservative messages. What happened to the established party members, who value predictability, preservation, the constitution, the pride of Britain on the world stage?

Why have we lost the reformers, who described the United Kingdom in terms of powerhouses, not tension-filled environments? Let me emphasize, I wasn’t wild about both groups either, but it’s absolutely striking how these ideologies – the broad-church approach, the reformist element – have been marginalized, in favour of relentless demonisation: of immigrants, Muslims, social support users and protesters.

And talk about what they cannot stand for any more. They describe protests by elderly peace activists as “carnivals of hatred” and employ symbols – British flags, patriotic icons, all objects bearing a bold patriotic hues – as an direct confrontation to anyone who doesn’t think that complete national identity is the best thing a human can aspire to.

There doesn’t seem to be any inherent moderation, that prompts reflection with their own values, their own hinterland, their original agenda. Each incentive the Reform leader throws for them, they pursue. Therefore, no, it’s not fun to observe their collapse. They are pulling civil society into the abyss.
